Under Proposition 203, Arizona Tribes have an option as to how they want to take advantage of the funds that are available to help children 0-5 within their tribal communities. Each Arizona Tribe had the opportunity to establish their own Regional Partnership Council located on their tribal lands or stay within a designated region. Today, 10 Arizona Tribes have elected to form their own regions.
State-Tribal Consultation Policies
In 2006, Governor Napolitano issued Executive Order #2006-14 recognizing the government to government relationship between the state and tribal government and directing all Executive Branch agencies to develop to draft policies which guide their work and interaction with Federal-recognized Tribes in Arizona. As a further commitment, Governor Napolitano conducts Tribal Leaders Roundtable quarterly meetings with Arizona Tribal leadership. In recognition of her efforts, the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) gave Governor Napolitano their Governmental Leadership Award.
